Pontiac Repair: 1998 Grand AM wont start, auto parts shop, battery connections

Question
Here's the situation.  Out running errands, multiple stops, engine off, engine on, drive, engine off, engine on.  My wife and I make our final stop before returning home, run into to the store for roughly 15 mins, return to the vehicle.  I attempt to start the car, the engine makes an abnormal whirling sound(like the teeth aren't catching on the starter) i turn the ignition off, attempt to start it again, hear the single "chink" sound, nothing after that, attempt to start again, same single "chink" sound.  I call my father, ask him a billion questions, narrow it down to most likely being the starter, get in touch with a friend who comes out and helps me remove the old starter, we take it in to the auto parts shop down the street, have the starter tested, it's faulty.  Figure cat's in the bag and I'm about to get this done and go get food.  Buy a new starter, go install it, turn the key.... same single "chink" sound.  I'm clueless at this point.  Any pointers on what to check next?

Answer
well first off lets try this . clean and reconnect battery connections, try jumpoing the car battery , if it starts let it run for 30 minutes and try to startit again if it does whoooppeee! if not chek for loose conncetions or bad abttery, ,,,, now let say you do this and still get a ching sound. make sure there are no shims with the new starter, chek all the wires to it for tightness and in the right spot and retry too start it, and if that fails remove the starter from the car take it back to the parts store for tseting
