Pontiac Repair: grand prix, colored smoke, steering column

Question
I have an old 1988 grand prix with 75,000 miles and it is running great except today on the way home, i smelled a wiring burning and noticed some like colored smoke coming out of the steering column. I was close to home so I made it, and when I turned the car off it quit, but now I don't know if it safe to drive it or what! Please advise

Answer
well i cannot tell you if it is safe or not. being a vol fireman as well, i know wiring problems can cause major fires, i would suggest getting someone to disconnect the battery and having a person with knowledge of cars look at it .. wiring shorts even give the experts hard times too.. chances are it smokes a ignition switch but thats a guess.
