Pontiac Repair: help buying a pontiac, pontiac grand am, great shape

Question
my boyfriends freind is selling her 98 pontiac grand am, 2 door, automatic ( sorry thats all i know about it). shes selling it for $1700-$2500. its in great shape, no problems but i want to know if this will be a good for my first car, how expensive repais will be, and mayjor problems the cars have. thank you!

Answer
According to KBB.com book value for a 98 grand am two door is $3,570 in excellent condition and $2,730 in fair condition. So it is not overpriced.
I do not see why a Grand Am wouldn’t make a good first car.
The Grand Am is a very sporty looking ride. Repairs are going to cost you $50 an hour(depending on where you live) no matter what you drive and all cars have their problems. I cannot name any major problems, and the v6 is a reliable engine. I don't know anything about four cylinder Grand Ams because I have never worked on one. You should check all the fluids before you buy it, you know it was not well maintained if you check the oil and it is low or very dirty. Your best bet would be to take somebody with you who knows a lot about cars. The most important thing you can ask is why she is selling it.

I hope that helps a bit.
