Pontiac Repair: 96 Grand Am Inst. cluster, best guess, instrument cluster

Question
I have just replaced instrument cluster in my 1996 Grand Am SE with a used part. Now the car wont stay running. I have disconnected the postive battery for 20 min,with no change. Any help would be appreciated. The old cluster was replaced due to gauges inop and all warning lights flashing intermittent. The car will start by installing the old cluster.

This is something best answered by a dealership but it sounds to me like the security system is matched with the origional cluster. My best guess would be that the chip that reads the resistor pill in the key is in the cluster. Sorry I can't help more than this.
