Pontiac Repair: 86 grand prix 305 V8, deg, grand prix

Question
I replaced my valve covers with some chrome ones and soon after my car started run rough. I gave the car a complete tune up and replace the distributor. Now the only way to start the car and keep it running is to advance the ignition to off the scale. I set and reset the distibutor and no difference. The dist is not 180 out, but it will backfire at 0 deg tdc which the timing is supposed to be. The engine has less than 35,000 miles on it since i had it rebuilt a few years ago. I will appreciate any help u can provide.

Answer
Check to make sure that you didn't possibly disconnect a ground strap between the block and firewall, this would cause the floating ground the computer needs to be diminished and it might be causing your timing problems. Secondly if you are trying to set the timing without disconnecting the 4 wire aldl connector from the distributor first then the base timing isn't set properly. Hope this is a little help for you.
