Land Rover Repair: Discovery TD 5 Series 11 Year 2000, fuel pressure regulator, intermittent problems

Question
My Disco does not want to start when in Park.  Seems to happen intermittently.  Today after only travelling very short distance, didn't work.  Other days when running around town it is OK.  Always starts in Neutral.  Only recent work has been fitting new Fuel Pump that sits above fuel tank.
Thanks very much.

Answer
Hi Peter,

my first thought was a fuel delivery problem, perhaps even fuel pressure regulator.  Have the fuel line pressure tested.  Perhaps the install of fuel pump damaged something, or new pump but recycled hose connection?  Did you install the fuel pump yourself?  Was the pump new or rebuilt?

Don't think it's the Park/Neutral switch but ...  next time you have trouble starting in PARK, try jiggling the shifter to see if it starts.  Some owners report that they've played with the shifter and lo and behold it started.  Weird or what?

Intermittent problems are difficult to trace so you have to start with the basics: fuel delivery, spark, ECU.

Hope this helps,
