Pontiac Repair: 1991 Bville code 41, crank sensor, fuel mileage

Question
Hi Kris

1991 Pontiac B'ville 3.8

The service engine soon light is on, and it shows a code 41 (cam sensor).

I replaced the cam sensor, and cleared the code.  Upon startup, the light popped on again with the same code.

Any advice on where to look next?

Poor fuel mileage, intermittent high idle, and intermettitent stalling go along with this.

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer
Alright Andrew first thing to have done is to put this on a scan tool that has datastream capability and watch the data flow to make sure that all the proper inputs are there. There is no separate code for a crank sensor so there is a very slight chance it might be a problem but very unlikely because it won't run at all without proper signal from the crank. It is much more likely that you have a wiring problem and that would explain why there is an immediate return of the code and problems. Get a wiring diagram and check the continuity for the sensor wiring. If I remember correctly there is a wire that runs between that sensor and the coil pack directly plus the wire that runs to the computer so a break in either will cause issues. Hope this helps you and good luck :)
