Pontiac Repair: 91 Pontiac grand am wont start, butterfly valve, pontiac grand am

Hi.
I have a 91 Grand Am 2.5L that has 81K miles on it.  It ran and started great for years, but then we bought a new car and didn't trade it in.  It has been sitting in our driveway for just over a year now.  I have tried to start it and nothing works.  No lights come on or anything.  I tried to jump it.  The overhead light came on and it would just turn over, not start.  Then I poured an ounce or two of new gas in the...don't know what it is called, but I have heard it called the butterfly valve... It started, backfired, then died.  I'd like to get it started so I can sell or trade it.

Hi, if this is the frist time you have tryed starting the car in the pass year, then you will need to put in some new gas, after you put the gas in, and it still wont start then clean the plugs, or put new one in, also make sure that the fuel pump is coming on, what you poured the gas into is call a throttle body.
