Pontiac Repair: serpentine belt removal, serpentine belt, strong spring

Older guy here, who last replaced belts on a '67 mustang. How do I get the serpentine belt off to remove the alternator?

Hi, there is a tensioner that you will have to releass off of the belt, it has a hold in it for a 1/2 break bar to fit in to, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise.You will have to hold the tensioner until you get the belt off the alternator. Note the tensioner has a very strong spring in it.
