Hi, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I was trying to find out answers to the questions you had asked. I don't know the code number, I would have to take it back to the shop and pay to have it put on thier computer again. I do know for sure it was the O2 sensor code, and we did replace the only O2 sensor in the car, the front one. I checked my records on the coil pack question, and it seems I wa wrong. I changed the coil pack housing, which I call the distributer cap, but not the coil packs themselves. I asume this means I should change the coil packs right away ? Also, there is something else I forgot to say last time, the car is really, really hard on gas, I drive a 3/4 ton dodge pickup with a cummins engine in it and I get way better gas milage than her. The other important thing is that the oil is full of gas. We change it, but after a while it smells like gas again.
So, what now ? Change the coil packs, or try a map sensor ? Thanks for your help, I can't find anyone around me that seems to know anything about these cars.

My wife has a 1996 Grand Am 4cyl ( 2.4L ). It has @ 70,000 Miles on it, and we bought it brand new. For the last couple years we have been having nothing but problems with it, and can't find anyone that has a clue what's going on. It runs very rough, chugs, and jerks back and forth, especially when trying to go up a hill. The check engine light used to come on, and the car would sputter along and almost die, if you floored it you would be OK, and the light would go back off. Now the light stays on all the time. In the past year we have done the usually, new spark plugs, coil pack ect. I can't remember the code number, but we took it to a shop, they put it on thier computer, and told us it was the O2 sensor, the one behind the catylitic converter, only problem was there isn't one there, and there never was. No fitting in the exhaust pipe, which is the original exhaust, and the wires that would go to it were tucked away up in the motor. I figure if the car hasn't needed it for the first 6 years of it's life why would it need it now. We did replace the one infront of the converter, but it didn't help. The car was actually mase in late 95, but is a 96. I am told that 95's only had the one sensor, and 96's had the 2 sensors. I figured GM might have been using up some left over 95 exhaust systems. We also put a new computer in it, but that didn't fix it either. Does anyone have any suggestions on where else I should look for problems ?

Hi, here are some codes see do you recall seeing them, codes 32, po401, this is for the egr valve, if these codes has come up, then it would be the egr valve. If this was one of the code 33,po106,107,108, then it would be the map sensor.Ok now when you changed the coil packs did you change the housing?

Hi, no i would not change the coils or map sensor,  The gas in the oil is one or two things, one is the fuel pressure regulator,two the injectors what they are doin is putting out a stream of gas, instead of a misted. And it can't burn all the gas that is goin in to the engine, so all this extra gas will go to the oil pan.
