Pontiac Repair: Fuel Gage, pontiac bonneville, purple wire

Question
The car is a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville.  It is a 3.8 engine that is not supercharged. The fuel gage does not work.  Is there a fuse for that? What things should I look for ?

Answer
Hi steve, this could be the sending unit In the gas tank. You can chack this by disconnect the electrical conector at the  sending unit. you do this at the fuel tank. jack the car up put it on jackstands. disconnect the conector going to the fuel level sending unit. after unpulging the conector trun the ignition to the on position. the gauge should deflect to the maximum full position. Using a jump wier, ground the wire to the fuel level sending unit. (it's usually the pink or purple wire. The needle on the gauge should now read empty. If the gauge responds properly to these checks the harness and gauge are ok. replace the fuel level sending unit.
