Pontiac Repair: Digital Odometer/Speedometer..., digital odometer, pontiac grand prix

Question
I just bought my daughter a Pontiac Grand Prix, it's a 1989 -LE.  When we test drove it, the odometer worked fine - the speedometer didn't at first but then kicked on 1/2 way thru test drive.  It worked for about half of our trip home then stopped.  There is still the digital display - still shows a zero... and now the RPM's and odometer isn't working.  The odometer didn't go to zero or blank - but just hasn't changed in mileage.  My fear is the gas gauge - which also is digital may not be working too.  Can you give me a sense of what may be the problem here?  It had a dead battery at the dealership when we bought it - they switched out the battery and I at first thought maybe that it just needed time to rejuice all back up...   I don't want her getting stuck somewhere - she's only 17...

Thank you!

Answer
There were alot of problems with the digital dashes back in the 80's. It more than likely has a crack in the circuit board that is causing all of the problems. If you are good with electronics, you might be able to find the bad spot and repair it. If not, you can have the dealership send the dash cluster out for repairs at a Delco repair center.
