Pontiac Repair: ABS ??, riverview new brunswick, new brunswick canada

Question
I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. Recently the brakes started making a noise ..squeaking and crunching at times.  It was found  to need new pads and rotors (also rear drums) and everything seemed fine for a few days. Then,lo and behold, the crunching noise has come back, but not all the time. It seems more noticible after the car has been idle for a while.
The mechanic who installed the new brake components says it could be the ABS module (which would cost a LOT of money).
I know it needs a dealer check, no doubt, but does the sound and character of the noise that i have described sound like that sort of issue.
A GM parts rep I called just for a ballpark price on a module (frightening) mentioned a possible sensor problem, or even a bad wire./
I would appreciate any comments.....
thanks..bob miller

Answer
It could just be surface rust on the rotors and drums. Especially since you said that it is more noticeable after it sit for awhile. If this is the case, it will only make the noise for the first few stops until the rust is "wiped" away by the pads.
It could also be an ABS problem, most likely a wheel speed sensor that is starting to go bad. It is probably NOT the ABS module. Very rare for the module to go bad on your vehicle.
