Porsche Repair: 993 convertible top, copper conductor, porsche owners

Question
I was closing the top on my 1995 993 and about halve way closed it just stopped . No motor sound , nothing, just dead. I checked the fuse and it looks fine. What should I do the top is sticking straight up. Where is the motor /motors and what should I look for or check . Any help would be nice . Thanks

Answer
Well, having the top up sounds like an innovative way to make a thrust reverser, however the timing is not good.

I'm not 100% keen on the 993,however I have an 87 cab and possibly your 993 is alike this earlier model and design.

You can manually crank the top down by removing the plastic cap on the rear seating area side panels.  When you remove the caps on each side you should see a nut which can be turned with socket; I believe you loosen these about two turns, then pull up the top carefully (its in the owner's manual if you have yours).

Failure could be caused by a few items: here are a few I've located for you (thanks to fellow Porsche owners):
"a solder joint on the control unit under the drivers side footwell, sort of under the dash vent"
"microswitch on the emergency brake. There is a copper conductor that attaches to the back of the brake arm under the center console."

Let me know if this helps you.
