Porsche Repair: 911 sc will not start, engine fires, terminal numbers

Question
This 1979 911sc has been sitting without being started for about 6 months. I installed new battery, and it turns over but does not start. Starter fluid works and engine fires, but then it instantly dies. Gas guage indicates 1/4 tank of gas. I believe that this is a fuel issue. Either fuel pump, or fuel injectors. What is my next step?

Answer
Hi Brian,

The fuel pump and its relay are much easier to check out, so let's start there...especially since there would be nothing to check on the injectors if the pump is not working.

First you have to locate the relay...but because I"ve never owned a 911 I don't really know where to send you to look.

You can test the relay and check to see if the pump is running at that location.  So...find the relay and verify it has terminal numbers 30, 85, 86, 87, and/or 87a.  If those numbers are there you can "jumper" the 30 and 87 relay "sockets".......When you do this you'll be sending battery voltage (30) directly to the fuel pump (87) and you should hear it run.  Check this out and let me know what you find.
