Question
my 1977 924 will not start. it cranks like crazy but will not turn over or even try. I am new to this and would like you to list the possible problems and corrective action. I did search through the questions but, i need more info. thank you

Answer
Hi Joe,

You didn't find the whole list of possibilities 'cause no one has put that kind of monster list together before.  It would be helpful to know a bit about your car, like when did it run well last, when was the last tuneup, how many miles, etc.

In the meantime, you have to start at the basics.  You need air, fuel, compression and spark to get the results you want.  So...the air filter has to be spotless, the fuel pump can be tested at the fuel rail to prove fuel is arriving at the engine, compression can be tested at each cylinder, and spark can be tested as well.

If the starter is cranking, then check the coil next.  You've got to have battery voltage at the coil when the key is "On" and in the "Start" positions.  If voltage is OK at the coil, pull a spark plug and test for spark there.  This test is not one you want to try unless you've done it before or someone who has done it is guiding you.

Give me some more feedback on the car and what you learn about its air, fuel, compression and spark, OK?

Dave
