Porsche Repair: 1972 911t fuel pump, electric pumps, terminal numbers

Question
Hello Dave:

I think I may need to replace my fuel pump, but am not sure of
where it is, and how to make sure that's the problem.  The
symptoms are that the car just won't start.  Before I had this
problem, I could always hear the pump running during starting.
Now, when I'm cranking it, there is no pumping sound.  How do I
determine if it's the pump, or a pump relay?  I don't even know
where it is, as the owner's manual and my repair book are both
rather vague.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Bob,

As for where it is...the electric pumps typically get mounted as close to the fuel tank outlet as possible, and vertically below it.  This allows the fuel to drain to the fuel pump via gravity.  It then pushes the fuel back to your engine.  Under the fuel tank can mean only one thing...jack up the front of the car and get the flashlight out...

It very well could be the relay.  Once you find the pump you should be able to trace the wires back to the relay.  When you do, write back to me and we'll test it.  When you write, give me the terminal numbers you find on the relay...and the color of the wire attached to each...if you can.  You'll likely see 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a on the relay.
