Porsche Repair: 944, shift linkage, dollar job

Question
I just bought a 83 944 porsche three days ago and I'm alredy having trouble with it. Heres whats happening: when I take the engine above 3000 rpms the clutch doesn't disengage and I can't get the car out of gear. When I took it into the shop they suggested that I rebuild the transmission, a 4000 dollar job! I aws wondering if there was possibley a simpler, cheaper solution. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Matt,

I'm sorry your purchase has turned into a headache.  Here's the first couple things I would do:

1.  Relax a bit
2.  GET ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP!  Do not give them $4,000 to rebuild your transmission.

Now I have to relax a bit.  There are many possibilities, including the need for new synchos in the transmission...which would be the most costly.  It's almost a transmission rebuild itself.

If the final analysis requires the need for a new transmission, you will really want to consider a used one or a rebuilt one and replace it yourself.  Are you ready for some fun with grease?

In the meantime there are a few other possibilities, including the clutch.  It's age and condition need evaluation and when was the last time it was replaced and the hydraulic fluid bled?  Also on the list of things to check would be the transmission mounts/shift linkage.  With age, stuff starts moving around that shouldn't and the linkage can't always accomodate that.

I don't think you are even close to being ready to pull that transmission.  There are too many other things to consider.  Please check out this technical forum and read all the transmission posts/comments to get a feel for what to look for...

Most of the fellows on this forum do all the work themselves...and scour the earth for parts...so they'd probably react the same way I did (and you did) when $4,000 was mentioned.

Good luck.  If you want to ask a follow-up question on any idea above, please feel free.
