Porsche Repair: 944 camshaft removal, old cam, headwork

Question
I had to buy a new cam housing for my early 1985 944.  The engine has only 70,000 miles, but it wore the lifter sleeve.  I bought a new head and was going to put the old cam in the new cam housing.  How does the camshaft come out?  Do you recommend this?  The old cam looks fine; I think a bad valve caused the lifter to wobble and wear the cam housing.  My book says that cam removal is a dealer only item.

Answer
Hi Steve,

We're probably referring to the same manual because my reference also says the headwork should be left to the pros.  I'm not really sure why, but in your case I don't think it would be a bad idea to let a machine shop (you don't have to deal with the dealer if you don't want to) take a look at the parts and answer your question asbout the re-use of the old cam.  Have them measure it and check the bearing surfaces for out-of-roundness.  I'll bet if you tell them you're prepared to do as much of the work itself, they will be able to work with you and just do what they are best at.  Give that a try.
