Porsche Repair: porsche 944 s2 filters, porsche 944 s2, ebay co uk

Question
hi dave.

just a few newbie questions ...hope you can answer them.

i own a porsche 944 S2 (1989).

does the air filter have to be changed at the very same time you change the oil filter or is this matter irrelevant?

when you change the air filter do you just replace it or is one supposed to oil it first?

every how long (how many miles) are you supposed to change :

the oil filter
the air filter
the fuel filter

what do you think of injector cleaners (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8042770834&rd=1&sspagename=...)

thanks a million

G

Answer
Giulio,

Good questions.  The oil and air fiters are not tied together in any way timewise.  Here are the common guidelines:

-oil change plus filter change every 3000 miles
-air filter change every 6000 miles (no oiling necessary)
-fuel filter change every 12000 miles

If you stick to these you will be very diligent.  Most people stretch the air filters and fuel filters out so long they start affecting performance.

To be honest, I am checking the condition of my air filters much more often now.  I read a story about an engine engineer who said with the new materials they can work with the engines could last virtually forever if they could be kept clean.  By clean he was referring to the stuff coming through the air filte.

PS.  I have always been skeptical of injector cleaners because I couldn't tell if they really worked.  I had the misfortune of needing to see my state smog official not too long ago and we talked about these products...he was fairly positive about them.  I'm more open to the idea but I'd still have to see or feel the difference.
