hello dave,
i have now finished my restoration of a porsche 914 european model ('73, 4-cylinder, 1,7 fuel injected, 85 ponies)right now. all is really well done, engine and tranny works fine. but after the first test ride round the block, i am worry to see that some fuel has drop down the street.
after the inspeciton, i saw that the fuel pump does not seal betweet the top and bottom of the body. i am not able to find anything about that problem in a restoration manual in my home language, german.
so my internet research has found your tech tips.
are you able to tell my, how i can manage to seal this fuel pump body - i haven't opened it yet.

i also try a reserve pump, also unrestored. this fucking pump sucks the fuel right. but on the pressure side, fuel just want to flow to the fuel tank not to the injection unit. do you know how it works inside the pump. could it be possible that some mud will blog the pressure operation?

i would be pleased, if you could help me

kind regards from germany

Hi jens,

The only fuel pump I'm familiar with on fuel injected 914's is the Bosch electrical pump.  It looks like a cannister and it has fuel lines and electrical connections only.  There are no "sealing" points to or near the body.  Perhaps we are talking about something else?  There are mechanical pumps used on carbureted engines that mount to the engine.  Is that what you are referring to?

By the way, I checked your website!  Are you the owner of the dark colored VW with the Porsche style wheels? Very sharp looking!  When you have some time please give me your thoughts on building a stronger Type IV engine for the 914 for the street,  That's one of my next projects and you look like you have a lot of answers.

Thanks Dave

hi dave, thanks for the very fast answer about the fuel pump. i realise to make my own experience with the restoration of the fuel pump - no matter.

oh yes, the black '56 oval is my baby with 166 ponies on the wheels. if you want anything to know about streetable typ IV engines, you can ask my everything and everytime. my latest typIV engine in my race car (the grey '67 with fuchs wheels, called "kwicki") is also in a street set up with 200 horses (DIN not SAE!)on wheels and with 225 horses on wheels in the strip set up.
the 2,4 engine run a low 14 sec. in the full streetable bug with street radials - this is the best choice for a daily driver.

Answer
Jens,

I have a 1.8 FI in an original US '74 914.  It runs but needs a rebuild badly, because it's very tired.  Would starting with the 1.8 case be OK?  Is there a parts list you've put together to get all that horespower?  I'm not looking for the "secret" ingredient, but I would kike to start saving my money and so I was wondering how much I'd have to put in the engine.

Write back to me at:    daves356@yahoo.com      ...it'll be easier.
