Porsche Repair: 85 1/2 944 - clutch pedal goes to the floor, clutch master cylinder, hydraulics system

Question
Was driving my 85 1/2 Porsche 944 and all was well when I stopped and parked it after lunch while I was at work.  I came out a few hours later to leave for the day and the clutch pedal went all the way to the floor with ZERO resistance.  I checked and the linkage to the clutch master cylinder was good, but I could see a little bit of fluid coming from it and running down the inside of the firewall...so, I figured that the master cylinder went bad.

I just replaced the master cylinder and I still can’t get it to build any resistance.  The brakes are fine so I have to guess that the hydraulics system hasn’t been compromised but for the life of me I don’t know where to turn now.  Oh, and I opened up the bleeder valve and it’s not pushing any fluid out.

What’s the next step and/or likely culprit?

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.

I don't have my reference materials in front of me at the moment but I'm fairly certain your car has both a master cylinder for the brakes and a "slave cylinder" for the clutch.  If one is opened, both have to be bled to work properly.  As for locating the slave cylinder...it's a matter of tracing the hard hydraulic lines down the firewall where they go...but can hardly be seen.

Good Luck.
