Porsche Repair: Porsche air conditioning, flexible hose, freon

Question
Dave, I live in Florida and drive a 1988 911.  The A/C freon keeps leaking out.  I have replaced the evaporator and have put dye in the system before every recharge.  Still having trouble.  Any thoughts.  I saw your advise on the 1988 911 steering bearing which I have a problem with as well.  THANKS!

Answer
Hi John.  Thanks for the nice comments...I always appreciate it...and I'm thankful people like you take advantage of the archives...there is a lot of good material there.

I'm wondering what you're finding  when you check for evidence of dye markings soon after the recharges.  Are you saying there are no dye markings  you can see even after the freon level is topped off?  Could you get back to me using the follow-up feature of Allexperts...I'm curious for a bit more detail on what you've tried and seen.

In the meantime, here are two comments regarding my recent go-'round with my wife's car and its A/C.  I would never really suspect a flexible hose to be a leaking  problem, especially somewhere along its run.  Sure the connections should always be suspect, but in my case I found a worn-through hose due to friction from an adjacent bracket.

Also, when taking the A/C apart I was surprised at several connections being "easy" to undo.  Perhaps time  and other forces allow the fittings to relax over the years.  Now during my regular maintenance I make sure the fittings contiue to be tight.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks

Dave
