Question
what direction does the main crank pulley bolt come off standord thred or reverse thred

Answer
Hi Sal, I've often been tempted to ask this question when a bolt is VERY stubborn.  Usually, left hand threads are reserved for front axle bearing nuts on certain cars.  Most often, nuts used to secure the main crank pulley are torqued to such a high level, whether it was right or left handed wouldn't really matter.  At 154 ft-lbs that nut will be a bit difficult to remove, assuming it was torqued correctly the last time.  Consider it a standard right hand thread.

If it's being very difficult, take full advantage of leverage.  Put the socket on the nut, put the ratchet wrench on the socket, put a pipe, like a galvanized pipe, on the handle of the ratchet wrench.  Use the pipe as a LONG handle, holding it way out on it's end, at 36 or more inches from the nut.  That nut will be yours.

One important word of caution, when you're that far way from the nut, there's a great tendency for the socket to slip off the nut...watch this carefully...as long as you and your added leverage stay square, the socket will stay put...and the nut will turn.
