RV Repair: slide adjustment on travel trailers, slide adjustment, jam nut

Question
QUESTION: I've got a 29ft.fifth wheel with a 14ft. slide. When I open it,one side seems to start first and then the whole thing slides out.One side will reach the wall first, stop and the other end will swing into place and stop. It's about 3-4in. that it travels before coming to rest against the gasket. When closing, the side that was last, starts to move first,3-4in. before the other side starts coming in.It seems to close alright, just one side lags behind, until fully closed. On the opposite side of the trailer, there are two threaded rods, that stick 8-10in.out from the frame of the trailer.I like to know how to adjust the slide.  Thanks Jim

ANSWER: as far i know what you are talking about is not that uncommon. When you have a slide as big as yours is (over Half the camper) Somtimes they do slide at different times. This is for the idea that the rubber seal that goes all the way around the slide is not being forced to flip over and lay in the other direction all at the same time as that much drag would really put a strain on the motor, but if it starts one side first and then the other the seal is being moved a piece at a a time, and not as hard on the motor. I would leave it be the way it is for now. Unless it is not seating right or closing all the way. But if you see no other problems I would let it just do its thing because its not hurting anything. I hope this helps!

QUESTION:  What are the two treaded rods that on the opposite side of the slide used for. They're 1" or better in diameter and stick through the frame 8-10in.On one, the jam nut is against the frame and on the other it's 3" out from the frame. If it's a jam nut,it's not doing it's job.I would think that these rods are some type of adjustment for the cylinders that push the slide in and out.Could this be why the slide starts on one side first?

ANSWER: yes that i what they are for. If you are seeing that it is not touching go ahead and move it. they are adjustable.

QUESTION: It seems like the slide needs to travel another 1/8"- 1/4" to fully make a seal. Those treaded rods I was talking about, come through a metal plate that,s bolted to a small metal box of some sort. There must be a jam nut on the inside of the box,or so I think.I don't want to unbolt the plate until I know what's inside. To my way of thinking, that seems the way to make the adjustment.I really need your help on this.Thank you. Jim

Answer
it would be so much better if i was right there to see what you are talking about. if you are talking about the box that i think you are talking about that is where your adjustments should be.. but if you are only lacking that little bit to make a good seal, try lubing up all the moving parts under there and anywhere that will produce friction and see if it doesn't help it to slide in a little better and may make it a little easier. but you are on the right track good luck and dont be scared of it
