RV Repair: Water Heater Wont ignite, gas valve, thermal overload

Question
My 1994 Atwood G6A-7E water heater that won't ignite. When I turn on the switch the red light comes on but I don't hear the usual clicking of the igniter and the heater doesn't kick on. A local trailer supply tested the control board and it is good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Ervin, Does your water heater have a thermal overload on it? It will be hooked to the T-Stat where the power comes in at. From there you said that the light goes on, well does it go off during the lighting sequence? You may also want to check the ground wire out side in the same place the overload would be hooked at. The only other thing I can tell you to look and check and that is to be outside while someone turns it on from inside and watch and see what is going on. If the valve is opening and you just have no spark then it will be on that side and if you don't hear or smell the gas valve open then it is before the board. Sometimes a board can pass or valve then I would say that it has to be before the board. Then you can check to see if power is going to the board, by checking the wire that is on the end alone. If you have power going in and not coming out the board is bad, no matter what the shop said. Sometimes a board can test good with the tester the shop uses but can fail in the actual application. With this you should be able to find the trouble and correct it. Remember that the light being on says everything is good to at least the water heater. Thanks, Bill
