RV Repair: rv awning not rolled tight, spring assemblies, spring head

Question
I just bought a travel trailer with a 16' roll-up awning.  It ratchets fine and up.  On my first try reversing the cam, I failed to hang on the awning and it rolled up like a window shade.  I notice that one end is rolled up really tight against the trailer; the other end has about 3/4" slack, as if the roller spring is not tight.  Is this something I can adjust, by tightening the roller spring a few notches on just the loose end?  Thank you very much.

Answer
Robert, You can adjust either end of the awning at the spring assemblies. Be careful when pulling the attaching bolt because these are under alot of pressure and can unwind and you can get hurt in the process. I use wide grip vise grips to lock to the spring head and make the adjustments because you can put them on and take them off with the bolt still holding the head to the arm. You may want to check the canvas first to make sure it is even in length. I have seen some that are off enough to make this happen, and if this is the case you will never get it to be tight across the entire length. I also recommend that you have 2 people there to do this because it is easier if 1 holds the tube while the other adds the necessary turns to the springs. I hope this helps and remember to be careful while doing this. Bill
