RV Repair: 1984 dometic refrig, metal shelf, dometic

Question
I've got an old camper with a dometic refrig/freezer that has worked well.  After the last use it developed a strong amonia-like odor that filled the camper.  Nothing spilled.  Any idea on what that could have been?

Answer
Rob, I can tell you exactly what that is. The cooling unit has gone bad and needs replaced. Make sure the box is in good shape before replacing it as the cooling units are not cheap. This usually happens from running them out of level. You always level the coach to the refer and if this one has a metal shelf in the freezer put the round level on the shelf and level to that. This is where they get their level readings from when they design them. Just because the coach seems level doesn't mean the refer is. Let me know what you want to do and I can lead you in the right direction. Thanks, Bill
