RV Repair: cooling fan kaput on 30 amp transformer, long periods of time, duty fan

Question
I have a 20ft, 1996 fleetwood jamboree with a magnetek power plus tranformer (30 amp). The cooling fan made noise for a while but I havent heard it run since. I rarely use dc voltage except for a light for an hour or so. How concerned should I be about overheating on this small unit? Should I replace the fan motor or not worry about it? I was a generator mechanic in the Army and would be willing to try the repair myself but some capacitors carry lots of voltage and don't want to damage the equipment/ myself at a shadetree attempt. Maybe I should buy a small floor fan to blow on the vent.
Anny advice would be appreciated.
Thanks...............Tom, San Antonio TX

Answer
Hi Tom:

I would be best if the fan was replaced, as a safety measure. Im sure it must have internal overloads to protect it, should it overheat. What you may try is getting a small continous duty fan from radio shack. They have them in 2.5 to 3.0 inch sizes, I believe. You can look to see if there may be exterior vents, where you could put one of these small fans. Since you use very little dc current, it would not take much to cool it down. Tom your certainly correct, when it comes to those capacitors, storing up current for long periods of time. It pays to be very careful when working on these converters.
