RV Repair: norcold refrig problem, volt power supply, refrigeration unit

Question
I have a 1988 Shasta with a norcold model# 876eg2 unit. The problem is the freezer unit is working great but the refig portion is not. I am making ice cubes in freezer while the frig unit is about 60 or 70 degrees. This is the case using gas or electric. I have not seen any leaks and the vent is clear. Buying a new one is out of the question or repair of this one is possible up to a reasonable dollar. Ihave been told to replace the thermister, control board and have the coolin system checked out. Help!!!!

Answer
Hi Ken:

I'm not reccomending this test procedure, however I do want to tell you what I did to a refrigerator in my rv, that was giving me problems, and was very hard to determine if problem was with controls or refrigeration unit itself. Again, please understand, Im not reccomending this for you, but just telling of my personal experience.

I disconnected the power leads to the heating element that is mounted on outside of the boiler unit in refrigeration unit, and connected it to a 110 volt power supply. This way I know for certain it will not be cycling on thermostat or control. I let it run continously for 24 hours, and after that, I found out the refrigerator section also became cool, leading me to the conclusion it was a problem in the control system. After doing this I was able to identify the problem, and replace defective parts as needed. My problem turned out to be the thermistor was out of range.

Best of luck,

Larry

ps please let me know what you find..
