Saturn Repair: 98 Saturn SL2 shifter, advanced auto parts, saturn sl2

Question
I just purchased this vehicle with 120,000 miles.  The guy I bought it from had just replaced the shifter cable along with a small plastic squarelike piece that the cable goes through at the bottom of the shifter.  About a week after I got it the transmission got hung in first gear.  He took it apart and the cable was in a bind inside the plastic sleeve just below the shifter.  He got it out of first but for some reason it kept binding coming out of first gear.  All other gears shifted fine.  He ended up wiretieing a short piece of steel pipe along side the shifter cable in the plastic sleeve to keep it from binding.  It seems to work ok for the most part but when it is cool it is still hard to get out of first gear.  The hotter it is the better it works.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Phillip,
Have the shifter cables replaced.  I have tried many times to repair shifter cables, all with the same result....a pissed off customer.  You can find a decent set of shifter cables at Advanced Auto Parts, if you have one of those in your area.  If you don't replace them, you will have the same result every time.  Hope this helps.
