Saturn Repair: 96 SL2 AC Compressor, thermal expansion valve, ac compressor

Question
My daughter has a 96 SL2. The AC does not cool and the compressor is operating.I checked the pressure on the low side and found it to be 62 psi and does not change when the compressor is shut off. The clutch is not slipping. I believe the compressor is bad. I'm going to replace it, but I don't know the correct procedure for servicing oil in the new compressor. I would appreciate any info or advice you may have about this.

Answer
Jim,
Before you replace the compressor, I would replace the TXV (Thermal Expansion Valve, on the firewall with a/c tubes going into it).  With such a higher than normal Low Side pressure, I would suspect that the TXV has stuck open.  You need to know what the high side pressure is to make sure, but I would try the TXV first.  Even if that's the wrong call, you would need one for a new compressor anyway.  Hope this helps.
