Saturn Repair: 2003 Saturn L200 Timing Chain, saturn l200, 2003 saturn l200

Question
My 2003 Saturn L200 has just over 25,000 miles on it but warranty went off about 6 months ago.  Recently the car hasn't been sounding very good.  At first I thought it was lifter noise but didn't really think that was it because it makes this noise at normal operating temperature and I hear it basically at idle.  The noise is something you'd expect to hear from a vehicle with 150,000+ miles on it.  The nearest I can explain it is that is almost has a deisel idle sound to it.  I did some research on the interent and found lots of people have had problems with their timing chain failing and wrecking the motor.  I also found out that there is a technical service bulletin out on this 2.2L Ecotech motor regarding the timing chain and an updated oiler nozzle.  I took the car to my local Saturn dealer but they said the car is making normal engine sounds.  I don't believe this because it never sounded like this before and I've been around engines long enough and worked on them enough to know when an engine starts sounding different and not quite right.  My question for you is how to proceed.  Have you heard of or seen this problem in the 2.2L Ecotech motors.  I read lots of forumns and have heard of the chains failing as early as 38,000 miles.  I'm considering having the oiler nozzle replaced and possibly the tensioner and chain.  I know that won't be cheap and I'm not sure if I should do it.  The timing chain is arguably one of the most important parts in a motor so it's not something I want to chance.....but Saturn should be taking care of this if it's a common and know issue....especially since a TSB has been posted.  This car shouldn't sound like this after 25,000 miles.  The sound isn't bad yet but it's definately not the way it used to be and I'm concerned about the future.  I'm not sure how bad the sound would get before the chain would go(if that's what is causing the noise) or if there'd be any tell-tale warning before the chain would break.  Any suggestions and or insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Kenton,
The first thing that I would do is to look at the heat-shield on the exhaust pipe.  Many L-series with the 2.2L came equipped with them.  They can sometime rattle and make a "dieseling" sound.
I have seen some trouble with the timing chains on that engine.  I have seen them come from the factory with broken/misaligned chains.  It is not far fetched to say that you could be having problems with it.  However, if memory serves me correctly, Saturn fixed the oiler nozzle in late '01.  The 2.2L is yet another hand-me-down from GM.  It is built in Spring Hill, but the design was from GM.
When does the noise happen most often?
I tell you all that, but I have seen these engines go 200K miles before any hint of trouble.  I have seen all ends of the spectrum.  Give me all the details and I'll do my best to help you out.
