Question
My saturn L300 has been in and oout of the shop For a heater core problem thee mechanic said it was not the heater core itself but the hoses and gaskets. now when the heat is on it leaks antifreeze from under the car Im totally confused

Answer
Hello,
Coolant leaks are no stranger to the L300.  The 3.0 V-6 has been plauged with them since the begining.  Although a leaking heater core is uncommon, it is not unlikely.  I have found, more often than not that a leak from the heater core area is actually comming from the connection of the inlet or outlet hose of the heater core, on the engine side of the firewall.  I can't explain the correlation between you turning your heater on and the coolant leak.  That HVAC system doesn't use a heater (water) control valve.  Instead it uses a blend/mix door inside the HVAC module.  One case I had drove me crazy until I found a pin hole size leak in the heater core inlet hose.  The coolant would only leak after fifty or sixty miles of hard driving, and then would quit leaking after I put the vehicle in park to check it out.  Anyway, hope this helps.
