Saturn Repair: Saturn SL1 starting noise., saturn sl1, 1995 saturn sl1

Question
Hello, I have a 1995 Saturn SL1, The car besides this problem is in prime condition, having been taken in for checks reguarly at the local firestone.
I havent taken it in since this problem started however, because I'm trying to save money and I have plenty of experience with cars if this is a problem I can fix myself I would like to try that first.
A few months ago the car started to make a noise at startup, this noise (it sounds to me like a possible belt problem, but I can find nothing wrong with the belt) it maintains for about 5-10 seconds after startup, then the car runs fine.
So my question, does this sound like a belt problem or is there something else in the engine that could make a straining noise like that at startup?
I appreciate your help and I can answer any other questions you may have about the specifics of this problem.
Thank you,
Jason

Answer
Hello,
I assume you are speaking of a "squealing" noise on startup.  If you will take a 14-mm wrench and apply pressure on the belt tensioner pulley you will probably find that the pre-load spring has lost it's "spring-y-ness".  A quick trip to the local parts store should have you back in shape in no time.  Two 10-mm bolts hold the tensioner to the front cover/block, and if you will remove the top engine mount and jack the engine up with a floor jack/wood block under the oilpan, you will find that the tensioner is rather easy to replace.  Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
