Saturn Repair: Saturn SL2 Starting problem, alternator belt, saturn sl2

Question
I have a '94 Saturn SL2 with approx. 120,000 miles.  A few weeks ago I returned home from running a few in town errands, went to leave again, only to find my car wouldn't start.  Eventually it started and after testing my battery, it was replaced.

Today, while at the bank, I turned my car to auxilary while in the drive thru and the darn thing wouldn't start again.  After sitting about 15 minutes it turned over.  Any ideas?

I should note that my alternator was changed last year, and that my car didn't appear to have been over heating.  When I tried to start the car, the lights and other electrical systems all eventually died too.

Answer
Hi Renee,
Thanks for the info on the Alternator...that was my first choice...and, just because it was replace a year ago, it is still the most logical thing to look for...sometimes they go bad in 2 months!
But, I am hoping that yours may be the easier solution...the cables to the battery themselves!  They go bad (corrosion on the inside of the jacket) causes them to short out and make poor contact intermittantly.  They are about $20 or less to replace and are moderately easy to do with a few simple tools.  The hardestpart is getting to the alternator end of the positive cable.  UI have had to replace them TWICE on my 1993 SL2 and just recently noticed the sameproblem as yours and I know it is going to be the battery cables again.  Of course, a loose alternator belt can also be the culprit.  If you have an AutoZone Autoparts store in your area, drive it to them and they will check your car for free (that is if you CAN drive it to them!).
I wish I could have a more definite answer for you but I amhoping that the cables or loose belt will be the only required work for you.
Best of Luck,
Sincerely,
Greg Moore
