Saturn Repair: acclerator sticking, saturn sl1, inexpensive fuel

Question
Dear Greg,
FIRST,  thanks for doing this!  If you have any questions on replacing a clutch in a 1964 Rambler, I've done mine 5 times--let me know.  (Or, come to think of it, maybe DON'T let me know. . .  : )               SECOND:  I have a 95 Saturn SL1.  When I take my foot off the accelerator pedal, it S-L-O-W-L-Y drops in RPM's (like, 3 seconds, instead of the usual 0.5 second).  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Bruce,

Thanks for offering on the Rambler.  I don't have one! (A friend on mine has three...one for driving and two for parts.

As for the sticking Accelrator.  Two things come to mind...Carbon build up inside the air intake...around the butterfly vavle (although no lopnger shaped like a butterfly) tends to stop shutting completely the more the area around it gets gummed up and carboned up.  I have to use a spray carb cleaner and spray it into the intake boot with the engine running to clean it out about twice a year.  ALso, as simple as this sounds, the cables running to the intake (there are two of them) get gummy inside the jacket.  I have to run WD40 through them out once a year.  they have to be disconnected at the intake end, held up high and then I get a baggie, put a small hole in one corner, thread the cable end throught the corner, wrap a rubber band around the baggie to seal it to the cable and spray the WD40 into the baggie. It acts like a funnel and the fluid will slowly run down into the cable and out the other end...on will be in your car, under the dash so have something ready to catch it in. The other cable's end is tothe trans so don't worry about the spill out tfrom that one.  Lastly, you may want to run some inexpensive Fuel injector cleaner through the system...it works very well for this type of problem (the injectors get stuck open and close very slowly preventing the engine from idling down fast).  Here's the best way forthe Saturns: at half a tank of gas, add a full bottle.  Drive it down to 1/8th tank, fill back up to half a tank and add a second bottle.  Drive it to 1/8th tank again and then you can fill normally.
Between these three, you should have the solution.
Thanks for asking,
Sincerely,
Greg Moore
