Saturn Repair: improving gas mileage, improving gas mileage, carbuerator

Question
Hi Greg:

This is a generic question, but I thought I would ask you.  What if a special carbuerator or whatever was built that would interrupt the flow of gasoline to the cylinders for a millisecond or so while the car is traveling dowm the highway at steady speed.  The idea is that if the foot was on the gas only effectively 80-90% of the time, there would be a corresponding gas savings.  I figure that if the engine was not being powered constantly that the short time that it was not the car would move forward by momentum and thus wouldn't really lose that much.  I just pulled the 80-90% on/off ratio out of the air. What about some other ratio?  What would be the optimum time to have the gas not going to the engine so as to improve gas mileage without significantly reducing speed?

Thansk for your thoughts.

Jeff

Answer
the problem is one that gets overload all the time...exhaust emmissions.  It is very heard to lean out or disrupt the fuel intake without causing a lot of CO2.

Other than that, there are computer issues that would need to be dealt with...reprogramming the onboard CPU would be tough and since it would not be emmission-legal, nobody would take the time to do the research into programming the Computer. Lastely, Starving the system of fuel causes the engine to run REALLY HOT! Ask you Motocross racing friends...it'll do serious damage FAST!

Good thinking, though.  Keep that brain working!.
