!998 Saturn sl2--engine varies in rpm 900 to 1100 when in idle, continuously. Temp indicator on the dashboard also oscillates in time with the engine variations, about 50 degrees. Any thoughts? No repair history to date.

Hi Hal,
While I haven't come across this one, it is 95% a sensor, more specifically, the Crank angle or cam position sensor.  Since the check engine light ISN'T coming on, I would say the it is going to be hard to diagnose.
Sorry i don't have any more info or advice...as I said, it is a tough one that I haven't seen.

Best of Luck,

Answer
Ok, then the first thing you have to do is have the computer codes read with a code reader.  Your Saturn Dealer should do it for free (A reputable dealer will offer to read the codes for free...it only takes them 2 minutes and they can hook it up anywhere...don't let them rip you off...) Once they read the codes they can tell you what the codes are referring to.  Even then, don't trust them to accurately diagonose the problem...Saturn Dealers will tell  yo it is more serious than it is!  If the Dealer wont do it for  free (read the codes), AutoZone auto parts stores will...for free!
Once you have the codes read and know the  problem and find out what it says is the problem, then you can decide what to do about it.

Good Luck,
