Saturn Repair: starting my Saturn, saturn of southgate, autozone auto parts

Question
My 1997 Saturn SL2 starts fine when the engine is cold,  but takes 2 or 3 tries when it is warm.

A friend tells me there is probably a sensor that is not working and so the computer thinks the engine is still cold and is injecting too much fuel.  Is this a good theory and if so,  which sensor do I need to replace?

Thanks.............Emile

Answer
Hi Emile,
Indeed, the sensor is most likely the problem...which one is another story.  The Satrun SL2's have over 8 sensors telling the engine how to change depending upon conditions.  There are two located on the head of this engine that only monitor engine temp...primarily temp of the coolant in the head.  They are fragile and tend to go out of spec easily.  Replacing them is not always succesful as they more often break than not when trying to remove them.  It is very possible that simply having the codes reset will once again tell the computer that all is fine.  Unfortunately, I can't be more helpful.  A Friendly Saturn dealer will check the codes for free (and reset them, as well). It takes them about 2 minutes and can do it right in the parking lot or service bay, it hooks right up to a connector under the dash, and they know what all the codes mean and what is causing them to fail.  BUT, some Saturn dealerships are not friendly, not at all (Saturn of Southgate in Michigan, for example).  So, you can try AutoZone auto parts store.  They also do it for free and can look up the failure code for you, too. As long as it always does start when warm, even if two or three tries is needed, that is not too much to worry about.  The cost to repair it could be expensive.
