Saturn Repair: Service engine light, camshaft sensor, exhaust gas recirculation

Question
Saturn SL1 1999 4dr

Hi,

My service engine light comes on and off every few days. so when i was getting my oil changed I had the guy do a diagnostic scope on it. the codes (P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction) and (P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected). I was wondering just from the sounds of this how much would an EGR Valve cost to repair and what would be wrong with the camshaft sensor...cost?

I know I need to bring it in this week, but hopefully you can give me an idea as to what to look for!

Or is it something I should get done ASAP or can I wait a week or two?

Thanks

A C

Answer
It is not neccesarily an immedaite concern.  the sensor is more likely the problem, not the actual failure code being reported. BUT, it is a good idea to take care of it, if possible.  The Camshaft position sensor is the one to worry about the most...it is probably indicating a worn (stretched) timing chain OR the more serious problem of the timing chain tensoner not putting sufficient tension on the chain...that will cause a serious engine problem if not tended to.  Unfortunately, the code isn't specific enough to tell if it is any one of those situations.  In my case, the timing chain tensioner failed causing an evetual engine replacement. That is the only reason I can think of for the Camshaft sensor reporting a malfunction aside from the sensor itself being faulty.  The ERG will cause problems like stalling or hesitation during acceleration above 20 MPH, as a rule.  I don't know how much it would be to replace the EGR.  The timing kit is about $180 and is a difficult job to replace due to the extremely tight clearance between the front of the engine (the front faces to the right side of the car) and the fender well of the front right wheel.  There is enough room to do the replacement of the timing chain, spockets, and chain / tensioner with the engine in the car but it take a lot of patience and moderate skill.  My final advice on this one?  Take it to a REPUTABLE Saturn Dealer and have them diagnose it.  Sorry.  I know that is not what you hoped to hear.
Best of luck with it,

P.S. If the oil has been changed on a very good, timely schedule, the timing components are probably OK.  If the oil change periocidy was slack, beware.
