Question
While sitting at a red light or stop sign the engine will rev up and jump foward and the check engine light will come on and stay on until I shut the car off. 1994 Saturn SL1 Thanks

Answer
Hi Mike,
Hmmm...this is a tough one.  While I don't have a definite answer, there is a technical Service Bulletin about this from Saturn.

My Opinoin: It is more than likely a Throttle body air intake related problem.  There are different sensors that tell the engine to adjust the fuel mixture under different conditions.  It is possible that the fuel injectors are clogged a little and that starves the engine SO, the computer tells the injuectors to richen the fuel mixture which casues the engine to surge (rev up). This also causes the check engine light to come on.  It resets after it is shut off.
I have remedied similar problems by cleaning the fuel injectors. Try a 16 oz. bottle of fuel injector cleaner added to the gas tank when it is about half full.  Also, try spraying Carb Cleaner into the air intake with the car running to remove any build up inside the throttle body.  Make sure there are no air leaks around the intake boot as air leaks cause engines to rev up (it leans them out).
Sorry I can't be of more help.  I hope this helps out.
Lastly, take it to a Saturn Dealer after the light comes on and have them put the diagostic code reader on it (Free) and they will tell you what sensor is reporting the problem.
