Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Husqvarna Lawnmower hard to start

Question
QUESTION: HELLO MR JONES HOW ARE YOU? I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A HUSQVARNA LAWNMOWER, IT IS AN HU775   961450007 00 MODEL. THE ENGINE MODEL NUMBER IS 111P02-0116-F1  12042662, IT IS A 2012 YEAR MODEL. I REPLACED ALL CABLES PUT IN A CARB. KIT TUNE UP PLUS OIL CHANGE. IT TAKES ABOUT 8 TO 10 PULLS TO START, THEN IT RUNS EXCELLANT. TODAY I PULLED AND PULLED AND NO START. I AM GETTING FIRE TO THE PLUG. COULD THE OVER HEAD VALVES BE OUT OF ADJUSTMENT. WHAT WOULD THE GAUGE BE ON THE VALVES, SO THAT I COULD CHECK THEM? AND YES I AM GETTING GAS ON THE SPARK PLUG. THE IGNITION MODULE IS NEW, AND SET AT .010, NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN PLEASE SIR, THANK YOU, FRED.

ANSWER: Since you have a single cylinder OHV Briggs and Stratton engine, the closet model number for you engine states the valves should be .002 / .004 on an inch.

Did you read the Briggs website procedure for adjusting OHV engines?

http://www.briggsandstratton.com/eu/en/support/faqs/servicing-the-valves

There may be lock nut on the rocker nut you have to loosen and re-torque if you have to adjust the valves.

Make sure you watch the You Tube videos on adjusting Briggs OHV valves.

QUESTION: I SET THE VALVES AT .003 ON BOTH THE INTAKE AND EX. VALVES, TRIED TO START ENGINE BUT NOTHING. I PULLED THE SPARK PLUG TO CHECK COMPRESSION AND IT READS  ZERO ON THE GAUGE. I AM GUESSING THE VALVES ARE NOT SITTING CORRECTLY. I DID NOTICE THAT WHEN I WENT TO SET THE VALVES, THAT THEY WERE VERY LOOSE. MAYBE .010 GAP ON THE INTAKE. THE OTHER VALVE LIKE .006. ITS KIND OF HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS MACHINE RAN LIKE NEW A WEEK AGO. WHAT IS MY NEXT STEP MR. JONES?

Answer
Zero on the compression gauge is very odd.  Try setting the valves at:

Valve Clearance – Intake .003 - .005 in.
Valve Clearance – Exhaust .005 - .007 in.

Let me know if the above valve clearances gives you some compression.
