Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs and Stratton, briggs and stratton, vertical shaft

Question
I have a very old B&S motor not sure of the year.
Cowling stamp on the motor is Model 130902  Type 0456-01 Code 75062310

It runs but not for long keeps stalling, a couple of other problems. I'm thinking about putting a newer motor (not brand new) on the Billy Goat Lawn Vac.

How do i determine what other motors or years will fit bolt pattern and i guess shaft size would matter?

thank-you in advance for you help

Answer
Hi Rich

from model and type codes  130902-0456-01- it sounds a like
vertical shaft  , single cyl  l-head with rewind starter and  large pulsajet carburettor most likly a  points type ignition system   13 cubic inch , hp  from memory  7 or 8 hp

size of crank pto  you will have to measure  , but it could be 7/8 inch  or  22 mm
but measure diamter and length to be sure.

mounting footprint for briggs engines has not changed as far as i know - so any repower briggs engine  with vertical shaft, correct pto length & diameter  and at least same horse-power rating should fit , ( just be aware of any  length and width and hieght constraints when repowering any outdoor powered machinery )

as far as stalling goes  - might pay to check out the ignition system -
provided  compression is  good and no compression loss  from valves & valve seats
and fuel flow is good and is the air filter  and oil level  is ok

1st  - spark should jump a 6 mm air gap  while running,  run machine under load and see if spark stops or disappears when hot or loaded , if so  might be  points/ condenser failing

2nd
try cleaning out fuel tank and carburettor - clean/check all passageways / jets  etc
replace fuel pumping diaphram  briggs part 270026 and  tank gasket 270073
check clean  both fuel pick up tubes  1 long and 1 short

let me know what you find
