Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman chain saw wont start, exhaust port, gouges

Question
Hi Ben,  I have a craftsman chain saw model #358.351140 2.2 ccin/36cc 2 cycle ser#951654h03334 This chain saw was running hot with some smoke.  I changed the spark plug, new fuel 40.1 mix, took the muffler assy out and cleaned it thoroughly.  The exhaust port is free of carbon.  The strang thing is that this saw will only start and run with the muffler assy off.  With the muffler assy in place it will not start.  Should i get a new one or does this one salvageable.  thanks in advance for your advice...

Sounds like this saw may be done for.

With the Muffler Off, Look into the Exhaust Port and Inspect the Piston and Cylinder.
If the Piston and Cylinder are Smooth like Glass, then the Jug/Cylinder and Piston are OK.
If the Piston or Jug/Cylinder Look like Sandpaper has Scratched then or there are Gouges in Either the Piston or Cylinder, then the Engine is Trashed.

I wouldn't try to spend anymore money or time on this as it can be replaced rather inexpensively.
