Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): timing mark alignment, crank shaft, cam gears

Question
QUESTION: I have a relatively new 7.75 hp 175 cc briggs power washer. it was given to me not running. I found the tab on the crank shaft gear to be worn off. engine modle # is 11p902. the lobes on the cam are not allowing me to align the marks on the gears at tdc.. can you help me.. ? also does the govenor have a specific position ?

ANSWER: Did you remove the valve cover and push the valves in to release the push rods?  DO NOT remove the push rods, just compress the valve spring and move the rocker arms to the side.

No timing for the governor but the end of the govern weight shaft needs to contact the govern arm in order to operate the governor.

Did you have to replace the crankshaft gear?

QUESTION: yes, i am replacing the crank gear. it appears that the piston does not have to be exactly at tdc when alining the crank and cam gears. Is this correct ? the crank gear has a fixed notch....so when lining up the cam gear it's not at tdc. can you please tell me the trick to keeping the governor from moving while assembling the sump ?  also does the govenor weight shaft stay in contact with the govenor arm ?

         thanks Bob

Answer
Piston does  not have to be a TDC when lining up the dots.  The weght does have to remain in contact with the arm when assembling.

I usually have the engine upside down and place the governor weight in contact with the arm, which should hold the governor in place, when replacing the bottom engine sump (cover).
