Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD 3HP Edger, allen head screws, engine model type

Question
I just bought a 3 HP MTD that's kind of old and it won't start. I took the gas tank/ carberator apart cleaned it with gas. I noticed upon seperating he carb from the tank that there was rust in the tank so after emptying it and drying it I was able to get the majority of the rust particles out. Upon inspecting and cleaning the carb I noticed some gunk buildup under the little cover on the side ( held on by small four Allen head screws) so I cleaned it off and brush scrubbed the port and blew them out with compressed air.  I also noticed what looked like a little hose that may be broken on the bottom of the carb. The one on this carb is small. How long should it be and should it extend into the gas tank. What else could I do? It does fire up when I pour gas directly into the carb so I don't know what to do although I have it narrowed down. Where can I buy a new carb?

Answer
Since the engine starts when you pour gas in it then most likely the compression, ignition and timing are fine.

As far as the carb, the tube is about 2-3 inches long.  Most of the tubes are replacable.

What is the engine model, type and code number?  With the engine information I can look up your engine and let you know where to buy a carb.
