Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John deere 757 mid mount mower, battery cables, ground cable

Question
Mower starts and runs fine.  When getting off to move an object, while mowing, if i forget to turn off the mower and set the brake, the mower obviously turns off as a safety issue.  However, after this happens, it won't start.  The solenoid clicks like it has a run down battery.  We can jump start it and it runs fine.  If we let it set for an hour or so, it starts and runs fine. Put a new battery in it initially, thinking this was the problem, but same results.  Bypassed the seat safety switch, same results.  At a loss as to what the problem might be.

Also, is the alternator light supposed to be on when the mower is running?

Sounds like you may have a failing alternator, somewhere along the line to charging circuit is not doing its job well enough. You need to start the mower and then disconnect the ground cable while it is running,if it shuts off you need a new alternator if it doesn't then hook up a tester for 12 VDC to the battery cables one to the Positive side then the other to the neg side after you make sure it is still disconnected you should have at least 13 VDC or More output.
