Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler - wont run, throttle linkage, valve clearances

Question
I have a Craftsman mower with a Kohler ComandPro VTwin, Model number: CV730S Spec No.: CV730-0017, Serial: 3315604771

The motor spins but it will not run. It does run briefly with fuel in the intake but will not stay running. When the problem first surfaced it would also start with starter fluid in the intake but that no longer works.

Here is a list of things checked and fixes done so far:

- New spark plugs (Have retried the old ones and a second new set)

- New fuel line to replace cracked one from tank to filter. Other lines are clear and sound

- New fuel filter

- New fuel pump

- New battery

- Removed and cleaned carb. Soaked it overnight, cleaned all ports, seems everything is clear and moving.

- Cleaned and lubed throttle linkage

- Fuel is passing through all the lines, filter and pump and the Carb bowl is filling.

- The plugs are dry but the one on the starter side has carbon covering it (the wire also shocks if touched) and the other is clean (they are new)

- Wiring checked, connections cleaned

The service manual lists several things as possibilities including the starter, the carb solenoid, a fuse (I believe this is the one listed on a wire to the starter but mine doesn't have that.) If you think it may be one of these or another part can you also include if there are ways to test the parts at home, I have minimal equipment.

Answer
Did you download the service manual from Kohler's website?

Have you checked the valve clearances?  If you have spark but it will not start with starting fluid sprayed directly into the carb then you might have a compression problem.

Are you sure you have spark?  Were there any wires connected to the bottom of the carburetor?
