Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): tiller, rotary shaft seals, front tine tiller

Question
QUESTION: I have a old 5 hp wizard brand front tine tiller that leaks gear oil from the tines. Have tried oil seals with no luck, did this old tiller use some kind of packing to stop this leaking from the tines.

ANSWER: Some very, very old models used rope seal packing material.

What weight gear oil are you using?

How wore are the tine shafts?  We find a lot of old tillers leak due to the shafts and housing bushings wearing down in diameter over the years of use.

Are you using SAE80-90 gear oil?

QUESTION: This model is from around 1970 and where can I find the rope seal packing material.

Answer
You might try contacting the company below:

http://seals.mspseals.com/item/all-categories/rotary-shaft-seals/item-1628?

I would have the OD, ID and width/depth dimensions ready and provide them the information...they may have a seal available to solve the problem.

Summit Racing sells rope seal:

It wouldn't hurt to try the seal company, first link, as I have heard double lip and double spring seals provide better sealing.
